Spending the
day in the
hot sun isnt
normally fun.
At Herkimer^
it is.

If you ever had Mr. Monti
you know what Herkimer is
all about. If you never had
him, chances are your
friends know about it, talk
about it and at one point
experienced it. You don't get
the full feeling of the
Herkimer trip unless you are
covered head to toe in dirt,
sweat and more dirt. It's
impossible to forget
Herkimer 1999.

From six o'clock in the
morning, when everyone
meets in the High School
parking lot, to midday when
the sun is at its highest and
then back to the High School
at night to be picked up, you
know that day will be a day
never forgotten.

The annual trip, run by
Mr. Monti, is a trip to

Herkimer, a small town in
upstate New York. There,
students dig for "Herkimer
Diamonds." Whether or not
you're fortimate enough to
find some depends on your
willingness to get filthy.
Spending the whole day in the
sweltering hot sun isn't
normally fun. For some
reason though, at Herkimer, it
is.

Funny Faces

WHOOPS! We
caught ya! ||

Those not so perfect pictures...

Wouldn't you want to kill the person who took the pic-
tures, if they ended out like these? It seems like there
is always at least one picture that catches someone off
guard. Throughout the school year, we have always had
our cameras in someone's face. What should you do if
your picture is on one of these pages? Well, on the one
hand, there's no turning back, its already in the year-
book, and everyone has already seen the picture. On
the other hand, everyone likes a little good-humored
fun, don't we? And anyway, we didn't ASK you to make
that face!!!

Above: Jenn Monaco and Judy Glaskin show us how pictures can go wrong.
Left Top to Bottom:

1) Justin Gomolka, your face is going to get stuck like that.

2) Hey Brandon Phillips, turn that frown upside down!

3) Samantha Cole is in mid-dive.

5) Laura Macauley thinks, "Hey, no fair! I'm trying to swim here!"

The dictionary defines a "Morn as one
who looks after someone with great
care and affection and offers advice

one who cares for the sick and serves to
nuture and foster influence. We love

honored that you think of us as your
Moms away from home. We wish you,
"our kids" in the class of 2002, the
best of everything always!

Class 'Dad':

Dr. Davis - Nothing could be

SHS
Graduation
(Now & Then)

Through all the years, the struggles, the pain

For all the learning, the friends you gain
Everything you've done, and all you plan to do
To go into the world, and to give it a show of you
All the people we meet, some we remember, some we don't
Lost through time's sea, to other places that they don't go
But we look back to 12,1 1,9 and 10
We think about what happened now and then
Everything I think, of what I'll leave behind
It makes me want to sink, back to when I just pined
Foolishly to leave this place
Take a stand out in that space
To see what's after this we say we hate
Though never realizing til it's too late
We will miss and never have again
Thinking later about now and then
Of all the people we left, along the way
All the friends, the loves, you wish they'd say
But we all grow apart, and we all must move on
Away from them now but in our hearts never gone
And we think about the times, now and then
And when we remember back, back to when
We all did yearn for that fateful day
When from this place we could finally go away

Finishing with a record of 8-8-2, the boy's soccer team made the state tournament for the first
time in the past five years. In the first game of the tournament they faced Dennis-Yarmouth, and
came out with an overtime victory of 2-1. In the second game, the turnout was not as sucessfui, as
the boys were defeated 5-0 facing nationally ranked Weymouth. Leading the way offensively for
Stoughton was Hockomock League All Star and Captain Matt Bernstein, and defensively they were .
lead by Captain Alan Abreu. Other key players for Stoughton were seniors Joey Zbinski, Yuri o o
Bukhenik, and Captain Jose Ranero. The girls team was not as successful record wise, but there was
a huge improvement from last season. Led by new coach Dewey Eduardo and Captains Jessica
Sahagian, Kate Thibault, and Alison Batchelder, the team finished with a 3-12-3 record. Leading the
way offensively was Hockomock League All Star Val Burson, with eight goals, and two assists.
Defensively, Junior Captains Kate Thibault and Alison Batchelder led the team. The team is leaving
behind only five seniors. Captain Jessica Sahagian, Katelyn Barry, Keri Cawley, Kelly Unda, and

Rebecca Murphy, so the future looks bright for the soccer program.

The Varsity Field Hocl<ey team truly defined the word "improvement" this season. From the record of 1-15-2
last season, the team jumped to 5-8-7 missing the state tournament by just three points. The team fmished
fourth in the league, with a league record of 5-6-6, ending .500 in the league. They tied for fourth place with
Sharon and King Philip. The highlight of the season was the team's first victory over Sharon, 2- 1 . Led by
Senior Captains Amy Barrett, Jill Tracy, and Kristen Barry, the team was always ready, as 14 of their games
were decided by either 0 or 1 goal. Senior Back Joanna Bell and Forward Jill Tracy were named to the
Hockomock League All Star Team, as they carried the team defensively and offensively. The team leaves
behind 15 seniors, Jill Tracy, Kristen Barry, Amy Barrett, Joanna Bell, Lauren Koffman, Julie Kontos, Hermylyn
Latouche, Hermelynda Latouche, Amanda Innis, Megan McNeil, Paula Morals, Jola Pryka, Kimyli Recca, Rachel
Brown, and Heather Golden. These seniors provided great leadership, and will be missed. The team would like
to thank the coaches, Dan Mark, Kris Golden, and John Gallivan, for an unforgettable season.

this achievement through the efforts of the whole team, but especially because of
the efforts of their number one runner, Boen, and their number two runner, Junior
Jacquie Lourenco. The Boys Cross Country team was led by Senior Captain Bob Black,
and Junior Captain Tony Quintero, and Coach Harvey Blaunder. The number one
runner on the team was Quintero, and the number two runner was Junior Aaron
Rosenblatt. They finished their season with a 4-4 record. The cross country pro-
gram proved to be a winning program through their recent success.

The Varsity Field Hockey team truly defined the word "improvement" this season. From the record of 1-15-2
last season, the team jumped to 5-8-7 missing the state tournament by just three points. The team finished
fourth in the league, with a league record of 5-6-6, ending .500 in the league.

Black Knigh t
Football

The Varsity Football team showed that even though they lost almost 20 seniors last year, there was no
need for rebuilding. Winning the Hockomock league with a record of 9-1 (which hadn't happened
since 1975), wasn't their only accomplishment. They had a 13 game winning streak, 5 league All-Stars,
the number one defense in the state - only allowing 52 total points - and finished out the season
ranked 15th in Massachusetts. Not being the biggest team in the league, they got their wins by having
strength, speed and a whole lot of heart. The game that showed true Stoughton High football was
without a doubt the North Attleboro game. They went into half-time down 0-7 but, didn't pack it in at
all. They went out and dominated the rest of the game winning 14-7. All of the seniors are very sad
such a wonderful season had to come to an end. Especially since they won the league and didn't go to
the playoffs just because they lost a tough game to Mansfield on a questionable call by the referee.
They finished the season with a 35-0 win over rival Canton. The team that nobody thought would do
anything will never be forgotten after their incredible season.

Dt^ Mcmbcre of the Class of 2002,

As you complete your cducaiion in the Stou^Wn Public Schools, you are only at the begianing of a great journey where the possibilities are
only limited by yout imagination. This year, however, another dimension has been added to your future: responsibility. Not just the usual
rcsponsibiiily lo yourselves and your femily but now more than ever, responsibility lo your countr>-. For what you do as a monber of our
society has a direct impact on the future of this country and the strength of Amenca.

Durtng your four years at Stoughton Hi^ School, two major events occurred ihal demonstracd the need for thai strength lo ensure ifae
conlmuuig greatness of our society, our govenuncnt, our country The first happwied al the end of the year 2000 when you \verc juniors In
November of that year, we had a very close presidential election where the results were m dispute. The vote count was questioned; bow the
ballois were completed was questioned, the ballot form itself was questioned Battle lines were drawn along political party lines but not one
shot was fired.

Our dispute was fought in the court rooms based on laws and guidelines wntien over two hundred years ago in s document so well conceived
thai it IS still relevant and respected and forms the foundation of our country, the Constitution of the United Stales- The fact thai this country
could have the disputed presidential elccticm decided by civil people in a civil manner is a demoostraiion of tbe strength of America. Theie
were no soldiers on the streets of our cities, there was no marshal law. A process outlined by our Constitution and general laws was followed
and a final judgement was rendered. And despite anyone's personal feelings on that election process, everyone agrees that tbe person
occupying the White House IS the President of the United Stales

The other major event that occurred haf^iencd just nine months ago, as you wwc startmg your seaiiK year at Stoughton High School. Thai
horrible cvcnl on September 1 1"* also demonstrated the strength of America Almost 4,000 pec^le pcniied in New York. Washington, and in
a field in Pennsylvania; buildings were destroyed; busmcss was disrupted, lives were altered forever But while Amcncans were threaiencd,
America continued to be strong. We gathered together and did whatever we could, &om woriung at the sites, to delivering supplies, to
conmbuting money to help those families whose financial support vvas destroyed Thai was the strength of America.

While America must continue to remain on alert and take many security precautions, our basic way of life
America And while out govwnment officials may have been in danger, our form of government was ne
strength of Amcnca

As you move from Stoughton Hi^ School, you are continuing on your path to becoming part of that strength. You have that onwrtunay; and
now, even more b«. you have that responsibility A number of you will be entering the military You are going to be protecting American
interests around the world; and more than ever, you arc going to be protecting Americans here at home As wx fM3y that God is watching over
you, we thank you for that commitment and we are proud of you.

For those of you continuing your education, your choices are many. Through those choices, you vnW be incrctang the strength of Amenca.
Whether it is financial strength through business, technology strength through the sciences, educational strength through tea di t n g or any of the
hundreds of careers out there, each one has its importance in the strength of America.

These are some of the scnous aspects of what it means to be a responsible member of today's America; relax, you arc still young adults, with
parties to go lo, friends to make, music and sports to enjoy, and femilics to love. Just keep tucked away in a comcf of your mmd, the idea thai
some day. you are going lo be called upon to be part of what is known as, the strength of America.

Congratulations and good luck.

Thai IS the strength of
jeopard). Thai is also the

PHILIP J. lACOBACCI
GLENN S. LISTERNICK

Dear Members of the Class of 2002;

Wuch of what defines this senior class, was the surreal experience of watching
television during longblock on September 11, 2001, when your eyes and mind become
disconnected. As the horror of whot you saw gave way to grief, and grief began to
mix with anxiety and fear, you instinctively knew that your life would never be the
some.

All of us were horrified at those terrorists who plonned and carried out the
bombing of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Reoding about the families
left behind by this act of insanity made thot action even more reprehensible, if
that is possible.

Our anger toward those who committed this heinous act is justified, but we must
stay focused on who is and is not our enemy. That's going to be one of the most
difficult parts of dealing with this terrible tragedy. It is difficult and confusing to
know who is to blame and respond oppropriately. I do know that the sensible way to
deal with an uncertain future is to hold one's opinions until one has the facts to
remain informed, to read newspapers and watch the news on television

Obviously this painful event did not define the entire senior year. Vou hove been a
wonderful group these past four years. The spirit you've shown at sporting events,
at school functions, the earnestness you have brought to your ocodemic endeavors,
ail speak to your collective character as the senior class of 2002.

Best of luck in the future and warmest regards.

Stoughton Police & ^
Fire Departments

Through their years of hard work and undying dedi-
cation, the Stoughton Police and Fire Departments

should be recognized now more than ever. They have
helped in innumerable ways to restore, protect, and

improve the town, our school, and surrounding areas
through recent tragedies. Town officials contributed
much time and effort into relieving cities in distress.
Because many of these officials spent their youth in
Stoughton, and have been residents of the town for
years, a special thank you is offered to them. Their
devotion to the town is appreciated by all.
